Course Details

This is  course s a  5 -week course. it is a combination  of  LIVE online zoom sessions - group and individual, and digitally delivered demand materials which introduce the subject of the week.

Apart from the weekly classes with the instructor and the on demand materials, you will also have a weekly assignment that is directly relevant to the context you are currently working in. This is to you can apply the learnings.

There will be of course some theory but most of it is designed to directly apply to your work.

You will be given intensive, constructive feedback on all  of your assignments.

As a bonus,  you will have two  1 hour individual sessions to support you directly in your work. This are mentoring style sessions.

You will decide what you want to discuss in these sessions with me. Maybe you need more clarification on a particular concept or more direct support with a situation at work.

Maybe there is a challenging situation you are dealing with in your context.

Whatever your needs, I will help and support you.

Why you should do this course

You can never be TOO good at context!

Why you should do this course

The role of a decision-maker in the field is a tough one. You often  have to make critical decisions without necessarily having access to the right information or analysis.

Today there is increased criminality with violence. And there are more and more armed groups and aid workers are unfortunately still being targeted. The existence of extremist groups in the operating environment and counter- terrorism legislation has negatively impacted organisations abilities to be present in certain contexts.

Also, there are a lot of blurry lines between military and civil action. Contexts are messy, complicated and dangerous.

It is specially challenging if you work in medium to high risk security contexts. Or if you work in conflict zones. Or with high resourced programmes or projects.

This course will give you the conceptual foundation to analyse and manage contexts effectively. It will build your skills which you will directly apply during the 5 weeks. You will grow in confidence because you will be given a solid basis for action.

Complexity in contexts

Then, of course it is almost impossible to grasp all the complexities and nuances of the contexts where you are implementing your programmes.

Not enough training

Many of us never got enough training or exposure to the how to manage contexts. Tools aren’t enough. A tool is just a tool. Then, there is just so much going on all the time that you must give your attention to. So many distractions and demands on your time. We have to learn from a combination of direct experience, knowledge imputes, and from others.

Problems to solve. People to manage.

Never enough TIME

It is surprising how little time as decision makers we really get to focus on CONTEXT. Or even, just to stop to think.  If you haven't been lucky enough to learn from someone who knows what they are doing as you came up the ranks, managing complex field contexts can be really stressful.

Often humanitarian organisations don't have enough resources or know-how to train their staff well enough in context management, analysis or even higher level security management. It's a pity. After all, it is such a critical skill set to have. Right? It is important to know how to do manage contexts and security well. There is a lot at stake.

Who this course is for

This course will be perfect for you if you already have field experience but feel the need for additional training and mentoring in the essentials of effective context management. If so, then this 5-week instructor led course is perfect for you! You will also have individual sessions and feedback on all work!

This course does require experience in the field managing context & Security. It is not an introductory course. The idea is that participants will benefit from the experiences of others working in similar but different contexts.

Participants Profile & Course Set Up

After taking this course you will not only be more skilled and confident in your role..... you will become known for your context management skills and gain more trust from your manager in all that is context management.

You will be a better leader, better at context analysis & security management, better at programme implementation... best of all you will feel less stressed and out of your depth!

Important!

The group will be limited to 10 people ONLY! The reason for this is that with a small group, discussions and sharing of experiences and context challenges is better. There is also an added value in learning from each other's experiences and contextual realities, as well as from the instructor's knowledge and experience.

Ideally you would be in a coordinator level role with responsibility for decision -making linked to context & security. Or you could be someone with good field experience but first time in a decision-making role.

To participate in this top-level Context Management Course you should be currently working in a field location. This is so that you can apply the inputs directly and immediately to your work, practically!

The objective of this course is to improving your theoretical and  practical know-how in how to manage your contexts and security better. It does this by adding to and consolidating your context management skill sets.

By the end of the course you will feel much more comfortable and confident in your role, and you will grow quickly from there.

Unfortunately this particular course is not open to people who are currently NOT working on the field or who do not yet have any experience.

I will produce a another course soon for people in these situations.

Your questions Answered

Feel free to contact me if something is missing!

  • Do I need any academic qualifications to do this course?

No, and that will never be a requirement on any of my courses. I try to produce most of the contents in video or audio formats. This is for busy people and to match different learning styles. No academic qualifications needed. Just field experience!

  • What if I can't attend one of the live classes?

Don't worry, the sessions will be recorded so if there is one you cannot come to, you will be able to watch the recording. It is better to try to come to all of them to participate in the discussions but field work, and life are unpredictable!

  • Why are the groups so small?

I have deliberately kept the group small so that there is more time and space for exchanges between the 10 people. As everyone will be experienced, we will all learn from each other. I have prioritised quality over quality.

  • How flexible is the course?

The course is tailored. This means that if something needs more attention or less attention, I can adapt. Also, I want to be open to taking feedback and suggestions as we go along to tailor even more the classes and inputs.

  • Is there a certification at the end?

Yes. There will be a certificate at the end for those who attend all of the classes and who hand in all of the assignments (8) and meet the course standard in each one.

  • What happens in the individual sessions?

The two individual one on one sessions included in the price are for you to go more deeply into something you haven't quite understood. Or, to bring something challenging from your context that you need to brainstorm on. Whatever YOU need.

  • What is a LIVE session?

These are weekly zoom sessions where we are all present LIVE. They will once a week at the same day and time every week for the 8 weeks the course lasts.
